Log Cabin Coasters
by Jeni Baker

Materials:
- Scraps or fat quarters of at least 5 different fabrics
- Cotton batting scraps at least 4"x4"
- Coordinating thread

Cutting:
From focal fabric:
- Cut (4) 2.5"x2.5" squares
- Cut (4) 4.5"x4.5" squares

From remaining fabrics:
- Cut (4) 2.5"x1.5" piece
- Cut (8) 3.5"x1.5" piece
- Cut (4) 4.5"x1.5" piece

From cotton batting:
- Cut (4) 4"x4" squares

Instructions:
*Use a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted*

1. Sew a 2.5"x1.5" piece to the right hand side of a 2.5"x2.5" square. Press seam away from center square.

2. Next, moving clock-wise around the center square, sew one of the 3.5"x1.5" pieces to the bottom. Press seam away from center square.

3. Sew another 3.5"x1.5" piece to the next side. Press seam away from center square.

4. Sew the 4.5"x1.5" piece to the final side and press seam away from center square. Now you've got the top of one coaster finished.

Repeat steps 1-4 for the remaining three coasters.

5. Arrange log cabin block, batting, and 4"x4" square in the following order: 4"x4" square right sides up, log cabin block right sides together with 4"x4" square, and batting on top.  Pin through all three layers.

6. Sew around all four sides, leaving a small opening on one side for turning.

7. Clip corners and then turn right sides out. Poke the corners out with a turning tool or clean chopstick. Press well.

8. Top stitch all the way around your coaster, closing the opening.

9. Finish off coaster with decorative stitching if desired.

Repeat steps 5-9 for remaining coasters.
